San Antonio’s Southside is home to a very special community of creators, hard workers, and people that inspire–many of which own small businesses in and around the Southside. Our Southside Makers and Shakers blog series is all about highlighting the people making their mark on SA’s Southside. Each addition to the series offers new insight into the community and the gente that make the Southside so unique. In this blog, we hear more from San Antonio Realtor, Smiley Orosco.
Interview with Smiley Orosco
Tell us about yourself.
I’m a native San Antonian from the Southside, “Loyal to the Soil!” I am a realtor and live close to VIDA. I’m a proud father of two college graduates; one from Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and another from University of Texas. I’m looking forward to bringing them into the family business!
What inspired you to become a business owner on the Southside, and what keeps you motivated to continue your work?
I have always been a fan of the Southside. I see so many opportunities, and it’s great to see and be part of the change. I love being close to some of the best things in San Antonio like the Mission Reach Trail, and am always on the lookout for great neighbors. I love helping people find their own place to start making memories with their families! Being part of one of their biggest decisions, I pride myself in being a Southside ambassador and sharing my lifetime of knowledge about all of the hidden gems in our part of town.
How do you give back to San Antonio, foster collaboration, or build partnerships with other organizations/leaders?
As a realtor, I help families through one of the biggest decisions of their lives, as they become homeowners and find the house of their dreams. We partner with leaders and organizations in the area to promote local businesses as much as possible, because that is the backbone of being a proud Southsider.
Looking to the future, what initiatives or projects are you most excited about, and how do you believe they will benefit our city and its residents?
I’m excited to see the continued build out of the trail systems throughout the city. VIDA brings another opportunity to help many families live in the Southside and I’m looking forward to working with the great builders of the VIDA community! Also, I’m super excited about the proposed Arboretum, which will be close to my neighborhood and bring some well deserved recognition to the Southside.
