For the second year in a row, VIDA San Antonio has won Best New Community in the YourSA Awards, the annual citywide contest by MySA.com/San Antonio Express-News that invites the public to vote for their favorite San Antonio people, places, and things.
A Winning Lifestyle
The VIDA San Antonio community has won the hearts of many with its variety of homes, its parks and trails and community gatherings. Located on the city’s lower-traffic southside, VIDA is at the doorstep to Texas A&M-San Antonio, connecting to the energy and growth of the dynamic University. The walkable VIDA community includes a variety of parks and shaded trails connecting neighborhoods and providing peaceful escape. Parks are also the site of the community’s frequent events, from casual bounce-house and barbecues to its recent Easter Egg hunt.
With single family homes ranging from entry-priced $200s to larger semi-custom homes from the high $300s, townhomes and apartments, VIDA residents can choose how they can be a part of the dynamic community. Residents appreciate the easy location for commuters, and the walkable community to come home to. Award winning home builders including Perry Homes, Highland Homes, Sitterle, and Lennar offer a wide variety of home plans and customization options, with efficient designs that maximize space while lowering energy bills.
The first phase of Madla Greenway—the linear park that runs through VIDA—is a neighborhood favorite, featuring a soft creekside trail shaded by ancient oaks. The community participates in the Adopt-A-Spot program, where residents and staff participate in regular litter cleanups, and took the San Antonio River Authority’s “Don’t Let Litter Trash Your River” pledge. In 2023, VIDA also began its “Treebate” program which credits homeowners for planting additional shade trees in their yards.
Ana Park is the first of several parks in VIDA. It features a playground, open lawn, and shade pavilion, and is a favorite spot for community events. Future parks will welcome art installations, seating and additional play structures for residents to enjoy.
Transforming Healthcare on the Southside
In December 2023, the University Health System broke ground on the new VIDA clinic, the first facility on its 68-acre campus within the VIDA community. Slated to open in 2025, the clinic will provide primary care, specialty services, nutritional clinics and mental healthcare to the area. The facility will also be the headquarters for the Bexar County Division of Public Health.
In January, University Health also broke ground on the Palo Alto Hospital, a modern hospital with a 24/7 ER, labor and delivery unit, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, neonatal intensive care unit/nursery, and inpatient units for both adults and children. The hospital is anticipated to open in 2027.
Both facilities within VIDA align with a partnership between University Health, Texas A&M-San Antonio, and the Texas A&M Health System to provide educational opportunities and healthcare career paths, and serve a critical healthcare need in the southside and farther south.
VIDA Looks Forward to More Housing, Shops, and Restaurants
At the heart of the VIDA community will be the Town Center and Zócalo events plaza, a cultural and commercial hub for students, residents, staff, retailers, and the entire Southside community. The Zócalo will be an open-air plaza featuring a stage, seating and gathering spaces, surrounded by VIDAs pedestrian-friendly town center with a variety of places to eat, drink, shop, and enjoy events and activities.
Thanks to MySA readers, VIDA residents and all those who see VIDA’s vision of building a vibrant community.
