As November is Military Family Month and includes Veterans Day, this special edition of our blog pays tribute to the service and sacrifices of military families, showcasing the resilience and contributions of veterans within our community. In this edition, we interview Oswaldo Garcia, a Marine veteran and VIDA resident.
Can you tell us about your military service and what inspired you to join the armed forces?
I served in the United States Marine Corps for eight and a half years. My motivation came from a desire to be part of the best military organization and to serve my country. I wanted to contribute to something larger than myself, to stand alongside others who shared that same commitment to protecting our freedom.
The discipline I learned in the military has been invaluable. I prioritize punctuality and have adopted a mindset of perseverance—never giving up, no matter the challenges that come my way.
What was your role, and what were some of the most memorable experiences during your service? How long did you serve?
During my time in the Marines, I specialized in communications, working with UHF/SHF microwave and satellite radios. I served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where I had the privilege of being part of significant missions that tested our resolve and camaraderie. Those experiences taught me the value of teamwork and resilience in the face of adversity.
What brought you to the VIDA community, and how has it impacted your life since moving here?
Moving to the VIDA community was an exciting opportunity, especially with its partnership with the nearby university. I was looking for a thoughtfully designed community, and I appreciated the layout that promotes accessibility, including the no-step entrances. Living here has enriched my life by fostering a sense of belonging and connection to both neighbors and local institutions.
What was important to you when deciding where to live for your family and what features were necessary or important to have in your home?
When choosing a place to live for my family, I wanted a community that felt welcoming and supportive. The design of VIDA really resonated with me, especially the accessibility features that make it easy for everyone in my family to navigate. One of my favorite aspects of living in VIDA is the accessibility to various roads, making it easy to travel wherever I need to go.
How long have you lived in VIDA, and who makes up your VIDA family?
I’ve lived in VIDA for two years now, and my family includes my wife, Norma Astorga-Garcia, and our children, Elijah and Natania.
How do you define “home,” and how has your perspective changed since your military days?
To me, home is where you plant your roots and build a haven from the world. Since being in the marines, my perspective has shifted to appreciate the peace and stability that home provides.
What does Veterans Day mean to you, and how do you typically celebrate it?
Veterans Day is a time for reflection and gratitude. It’s an opportunity to honor my fellow service members quietly and appreciate the sacrifices we’ve made, both individually and collectively.
Is there a message or story you’d like to share that highlights the importance of supporting veterans in our community?
Veterans serve without expecting anything in return, and yet they are profoundly grateful for any recognition or support they receive. It’s vital for our community to acknowledge their contributions and to show appreciation for their service, as it fosters a culture of gratitude and respect.
