Interview with Brooke Busch, Owner of FurBaby Pet Boutique and Biscuit Bar
Tell us about yourself and your business.
My name is Brooke Busch. I am an Army veteran, wife, mother to two beautiful girls and a dog lover. We live on a small hobby farm in Floresville, Texas and have several dogs, horses, goats, chickens, cows and peacocks. I own FurBaby Pet Boutique and Biscuit Bar, located on Roosevelt Avenue in south San Antonio, which is a truly unique “heavy petting” experience for pets and their owners. We sell boutique clothing and accessories. We also have a bulk treat bar, dog ice cream “pawlor” and a free rotating photo booth.
What makes the Southside special to you and your business?
I moved specifically to the Southside because the majority of my customers were traveling from this area to my business in Floresville. I had noticed the customer base to be truly doting on their furbabies and many of my VIP’s (Very Important Pooches) are southsiders. It made sense to move my business closer to the majority of my customers. The southside dog community is unlike any other. They are fun, non judgmental, helpful, and just delightful to be around. I have made many new friendships since moving here.
What is your favorite part about working on the Southside?
There are so many things I love. From the cool, artsy, non-pretentious vibe to the great food. I literally have Lala’s Gorditas across the street, with Rockerdogz, Tandem, and Folklores right down the road. As a resident of a rural community, having my business here allows me to experience city life, and the southside has no shortage of interesting and wonderful people that makes these experiences memorable.
What makes the Southside unique compared to other parts of San Antonio?
I am from Rhode Island, so transitioning to Texas was a huge deal. I have been here for over twelve years now and have never found another part of San Antonio I love more than the Southside. I worked for a few years downtown and always gravitated towards the Southside art, talent, families, and access to great shopping and food. Like I said, the southside is a total vibe, one that isn’t captured in other areas. It’s eclectic, rowdy, exciting, and the friendliest, most real people reside here.
What does your typical day on the southside look like?
First thing we do is wave to Lala’s (Stephen), as he is cleaning his patio, then grab the best agua fresca from our neighbors across the street. We open and basically play all day. Every dog that comes in is treated like royalty. We feed them treats, love on them and have fun photoshoots. At lunchtime, we call Chris at Rockerdogz to put in our order. Eat, then more fun!
